The Namib Naukluft Park is one of the largest conservation parks in Africa, covering much of the central Namib Desert and the Naukluft Mountains.
The fauna is likely to be dominated by reptiles such as snakes, lizards and skinks. It is home to some of the rarest and weirdest plant and animal species in the world, including the Welwitschia Mirabilis, large lichen fields and Hartmann's Mountain Zebra. |

Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert is the one attraction that should not be missed. The area is remote, impressive and starkly beautiful. The huge dunes, up to 325m when measured from the base, constantly appear to change their colours, texture and patterns, depending on the position of the sun.
These star-shaped dunes are a sought-after topic for artists and photographers.
Sossusvlei is renowned as a "landscape" destination with various types of wildlife and an incredible birding spot with over 200 species recorded in the region.

Despite its small size, Mercury Island currently supports by far the largest breeding colony of penguins in Namibia, numbering roughly 16 500 adult individuals. With only a few exceptions, most penguins breed on the surface as the guano layer is too shallow to burrow into.
The African fish eagle has now been named Namibia's national bird. The evocative cry of the fish eagle is probably the best known of any African bird and is heard most frequently at dawn and at dusk. |
